EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2)

Congratulations to Cohort 2 Representative Doug Morley for receiving the 2024 Turner Prize, which includes a £1,000 cash award. This recognition was announced during the Geotech Group induction session for the 2024-25 academic year. Doug was handed his prize by Professor Stuart Haigh, see photo above. The prize was established by Philip Turner, a mechanical engineer from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Engineering. Turner, renowned for his innovative designs like the 10-meter diameter beam centrifuge, created this annual award to recognise “outstanding work in geotechnical centrifuge testing” by a research student at the Schofield Centre in Cambridge.

The Schofield Centre is a globally recognized laboratory specializing in physical modelling in geotechnics. It houses an extensive array of experimental equipment, including the 10-meter diameter Turner beam centrifuge, the Minidrum centrifuge, and servo-controlled 2-axis actuators for simulating various civil engineering operations. The Centre focuses on critical issues in construction and environmental technology, integrating field, computational, and physical modelling studies in collaboration with industry partners.

Doug, whose research project centres on the Development of smart integral bridges is supervised by Professor Gopal Madabhushi. Well done Doug!
