EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2)

Industry Lunchtime Seminar

Easter 2021

The following are the upcoming Industry Lunchtime Seminars at the FIBE2 CDT Centre, and the Industry Partners who will be presenting:

Sergio Solera from Mott MacDonald will speak on Thursday 6th May 2021.

Sergio’s presentation is entitled: “Two examples of different geotechnical engineering projects using sheet piles and precast piles”.

At Leighton Linslade, the design of sheet piles included their use as retaining wall, water seepage cut off, resistance to bouyancy and load bearing purposes for a new water tank. At Kinmel Bay, North Wales, a rigorous procedure of ground investigation, trial drives, dynamic and static load testing, and intensive construction supervision were required to ensure that the driven precast piles performed as expected, avoiding any excessive settlement or structural damage to the piles.  The presentation will discuss the two projects in detail, including foundation design, construction and monitoring.

Richard Boyd from ARUP will speak on Thursday 20th May 2021.

Richard's seminar is entitled: "From Principles to Practices: making the case for a circular built environment".

An economy operating on circular principles promises to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation, giving us the tools we need to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Yet the application of these principles is yet to have a large-scale impact on the built environment. What needs to happen to shift everyday built environment practices to create a circular economy?

Adam Box from Topcon will speak on Thursday 27th May 2021.

Adam’s presentation is entitled “No More Humans”.

Subtitle: The diminishing involvement of humans in the construction process.

Abstract: A thought provoking review of the pressures and challenges of having human involved in the construction process.  We will look at the some of the current ways that companies are looking to  augment the human contribution and highlight some areas in which I feel are ripe for additional development.  With an deliberate emphasis on providing an alternative and at times slightly confrontational view that I hope will prove interesting, enjoyable and insightful.

Topics Explored:

  • Current pressures to improve the construction process and limit the ‘human factor’.
  • The missed opportunities; areas where I feel the focus of improvement lacks in ambition.
  • What the future could hold, technologies and organisations that are helping deliver the future today.

Stefano Cavazzi from Ordnance Survey will speak on Thursday 3rd June.

Title: GeoAI for Connected and Automated Mobility: an Ordnance Survey perspective.

Abstract: The field of geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) has recently emerged from combining innovations in spatial science with the rapid growth of methods in artificial intelligence. GeoAI is an interdisciplinary field, spanning several scientific subjects including computer science, engineering, statistics, and spatial science. In this seminar talk, we will explore current research work undergoing at Ordnance Survey and partner universities in unlocking the potential of GeoAI in the connected and automated mobility sector.

Biography: Dr Stefano Cavazzi is a Principal Innovation and Research Scientist at Ordnance Survey where he leads the development of GIS and geomatics research programmes. He holds a PhD from the University of Cranfield and spent the last fifteen years working in the geospatial sector in both academia and industry specialising in geospatial data science. At the Geo IoT World Awards 2018 a team led by Stefano won the GeoData Intelligence award for developing an autonomous decision-making support system for emergency responders.

Adam Locke from Laing O'Rourke Centre will speak on Thursday 10th June 2021.

Adam will be presenting on “A Low Carbon Pathway: Product Based Building Solutions”.

Further details TBA.
