EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2)

Title: From cradle to gate: embedding sustainability into engineering thinking and choices

Abstract: In this talk, Federico will address the critical role of engineers and transport professionals in supporting global sustainability and the climate resilience goals. Starting with the broader context of of global sustainability and climate resilience goals, Federico will then dive into elements of project whole-life cycle costing and carbon impacts, emphasizing the shared responsibility each and everyone of us have for sustainability.  A couple of real-world case studies, related road pavement design and air / water quality issues, will be discussed. Ultimately, attendees will engage in an interactive reflection exercise designed to provide new perspectives on their individual and professional impact. Federico will conclude the session summarising key takeaways and encouraging participants to drive meaningful change within their respective fields.

The talk will hopefully inspire attendees to think more thoroughly about each of the choices we are asked to make on our every day and professional lives, to possibly change the future of transport infrastructure, to really be more sustainable and resilient as we all want it to be.

Speaker Bio: Federico is a Principal Consultant, part of the Strategic Consultancy team, in AECOM. Chartered Engineer with over 10 years of experience in road asset management, road surface characteristics, deterioration modelling and pavement LCA, Federico obtained his PhD from the University of Nottingham, under the TRUSS ITN MSCA training programme, in 2019 and dedicated his work to research in the field of road pavement and asset management ever since.

As Vice-Chair of the CIHT East Midlands Committee and Technical Champion for Climate Resilience, Federico also contributes to various technical committees, including BSI B/510/5 “Surface Characteristics” and PIARC World Road Association TC 2.4 “Road Network Operations and ITS for Sustainability.” These roles allow him to deepen his understanding of the challenges facing highways and transportation while supporting international knowledge transfer.

Passionate about pavement engineering and sustainability, Federico leverages his expertise in engineering, research, machine learning and big data analytics to model complex phenomena, automate processes, and drive innovation through the field of highways and transport.
