EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment: Resilience in a Changing World (FIBE2)

Talk Title: Can stadiums ever be really sustainable?

Speaker Bio: Tom Newby is a structural engineer and leads Buro Happold’s structural team in London. In his 20 year career he has been part of the design teams for several stadia, including the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the London Olympic Stadium, and TD Place in Ottawa. He is currently leading the engineering design of a new main stand for Crystal Palace Football Club in South London.

Talk Abstract: Stadiums are complex engineering projects which tend to have high carbon footprints and a high environmental impact. But they also have high social and economic value. Is the environmental impact of stadiums justifiable, and can they ever be really sustainable? This talk will discuss the state of the art of sustainable stadium design, and the challenges facing decarbonisation of the sports and entertainment sector.
